What We Do

EnDev combines flexibility with a bottom-up approach in its country projects to contribute to achieving universal energy access. Governments, private sector partners and civil society have direct contact with EnDev country teams to tailor the right approach and taking the country-specific situations into account.

EnDev’s support takes the form of an integrated set of support tools targeted at transforming markets for energy access:

  • Supporting the supply side to deliver high quality products and services – even in remote rural areas
  • Creating demand for modern energy services ranging from raising awareness to financial schemes to support uptake
  • Improving the enabling environment for energy access, including regulations to support a resilient business sector and markets for modern energy

With its projects, EnDev is directly supporting several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which the United Nations General Assembly has set in 2015 to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030. EnDev is targeting these goals in three main impact areas:

  • Energising Lives

Ensuring that no one is left behind, EnDev enhances access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy (SDG 7). Thereby, it helps reduce poverty (SDG 1), improves people’s health and well-being (SDG 3), enables a better quality in education (SDG 4) and promotes gender equality (SDG 5).

  • Energising opportunities

By providing private households, social institutions and small as well as medium-sized businesses with modern energy, EnDev helps creating job opportunities, especially in rural areas, and contributes to economic development broadly (SDG 8).

  • Energising Climate

EnDev promotes the transition towards clean and renewable energies. Supporting efforts to combat climate change is at the core of EnDev’s work and in line with SDG 13 and the Paris Agreement. Sustainable and modern energy access is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Clean Cooking
EnDev aims to contribute to a wider sector transformation with its clean cooking activities.
  • Energising Climate
How EnDev’s work towards combatting climate change aligns with SDG 13.
  • Gender
In line with SDG 5, EnDev is striving towards gender-transformative impacts.
  • Productive Use of Energy
EnDev seeks to unleash economic opportunities by creating and strengthening markets for renewable energy.
  • Refugees
EnDev is supporting the development of a local market for renewable energy services in several refugee camps and host communities.
  • Results-based Financing
EnDev has accumulated a wealth of experience, with insights into success factors and lessons learnt from applying RBF.

Monitoring & Evaluation

EnDev’s achievements speak for themselves. More than 31 million people now benefit, across social and economic dimensions, from access to modern energy.  However, reported achievements require an equally powerful system for monitoring. A robust and reliable system for monitoring and evaluation delivers high quality data on energy access to individuals, institutions and enterprises, supported by macro-level data on markets, public health and climate mitigation. Reporting of results follows diligent and transparent monitoring methodologies, avoiding duplication.

But the numbers don’t stop there. Impact and sustainability studies provide information that link energy access, poverty alleviation, economic and social development, gender and the needs of vulnerable groups like refugees and displaced persons. Reports, strategies and further information about EnDev’s achievements can be found here.

EnDev’s state-of-the-art monitoring approach includes a comprehensive verification and validation system. Solid verification and validation of EnDev’s monitoring and reporting procedures safeguards reliability and traceability of reported outcomes and increases transparency and accountability.

  • Documenting

    1

    Documenting:

    Data Collection

With the energy access finding its way to the target groups, diligent documentation of data starts. Each technology, product or service is captured (i.e. solar systems, cookstoves or mini-grid connections) and complemented with key data such as geographic location, target group and implementing partner.
  • Checking in

    2

    Checking in:

    Data Verification

As a first level of quality assurance, paper trail data sets are assessed for completeness, accuracy, and plausibility; phone and field verification ensure that the new or improved energy access exists, corresponds to the reported data sets and is being used by the beneficiaries.
  • Safeguarding

    3

    Safeguarding:

    Data Aggregation

All data sets from country projects are submitted to the centralized annual monitoring process and undergo a second-level assessment focussing on completeness and consistency. Only now data sets are fit to be accepted for global reporting.
  • Adjusting

    4

    Adjusting:

    Data Analysis

EnDev stands for a robust and conservative monitoring approach. Global data undergoes a final step that takes into account three monitoring factors: attribution, additionality, and sustainability. This ensures that reported achievements can be directly linked to the activities implemented, would not have happened without EnDev’s support and are long-lasting.
